Female: Dr. Weston, we get so many questions regarding dental implants. Can you offer the very basics so they can understand the procedure, and what happens during the dental plant?

Dr. Weston: Well, sure, sure. There are many different reasons why dental implant would be necessary or useful in your mouth. The basic explanation of what a dental implant is, is that it’s an artificial root form that bonds to the bone. And there are parts that screw into the implant and then we would glue a cap on top of the implant abutment.

So those are the basic parts of an implant. The different reasons why you would use an implant would be to replace a single missing tooth and again, this shows the placement of the implant and then the abutment, and then the final crown on top.

You can use this for a single tooth. You can use this for multiple teeth. You can use this as an implant supported denture so — or a hybrid type denture that the denture rests upon a series of implants that are attached with a bar. You can actually offer a removable solution that the implants will actually pop in to snaps and then they pop back out. That would be an implant retained denture. And then there’s also a fixed implant bridge that would be supported with screws into the implants that would be permanently fixed, only to be removed by your dentist on your cleaning.

So there are solutions to replace missing teeth using dental implants that offer a great advantage to using natural tooth structure because they don’t decay and it’s a great solution for a lot of people, especially denture wearers who do not have the confidence that they have in their denture to be able to snap in a denture especially on the lower plate. It’s a godsend.

Dr. Weston: Well, I think one of our defining factors is that we’re like having a dentist in the family. I think that we’re a very personable office. Yes, we’re busy but we’re not too busy to know who you are and to deal with each individual. All of the doctors who work for us are all highly skilled and very clinically excellent, I believe. Female: Dr. Weston, we get a lot of questions about root canals. Patients don’t want to have them done because they believe they’re painful. How do you feel about that?

Dr. Weston: Well, in my office, people think I’m Superman when I work with them and with an infected tooth. A lot of times, you’ll have a tooth that hurts because of bacterial infection inside the tooth. And what happens is the infection that came through the top of the tooth now goes down into the bone and that’s where the swelling occurs and that’s what causes pain.

Root canal treatment is not necessarily painful. It’s the toothache that they had before they come in is what they believe is painful. In our office, we do our root canals in two steps. The first step basically is just to get folks out of pain. It’s a very simple five-minute procedure and basically what we do is we get you numb with a little local anesthetic. We do a little baby hole, smaller than most fillings, and relieve the inside of the tooth and rinse it out with the anesthetic to get rid of all the infection sources.

Then we’ll put you on antibiotics for a week or so and we’ll have you come back in and at that point measure and seal the tooth all the way down to the base of the tooth so that the infection doesn’t come back. Ninety-nine percent of our patients find that first appointment five minutes — it takes us ten minutes to talk to you about it and five minutes to do it. But after that first appointment, I get so many e-mails from folks saying, “That was great!” “Jeez, no pain.” “Why are there so many problems?” “Why do people have problems with root canals?”

It’s all in the tactic. If you relieve the pressure, stop you from biting the tooth so hard by reducing the occlusion a little bit, root canals don’t have to be painful at all. In fact, like I said, people think I’m Superman when I do that. That’s one of my best procedures, probably one of the reasons why the most successful people — I’ve been able to get them out of pain easily and now they have that tooth in their mouth when they get a bite at home.

Female: Dr. Weston, we get a lot of e-mails regarding dental implants. The people are actually afraid to come in for a consult because they are afraid they can’t afford to follow through a treatment. How do you answer that?

Dr. Weston: Well, first of all, our consults are free, so that helps out. A dental implant in our office, I’ve a developed a business called “affordable implants” which is in Reading, Pennsylvania and we actually offer dental implants for $1,000. Sometimes they’re a little bit more expensive, but usually about $1,000. Most other oral surgery groups start at $1,700 and that’s just for the implant alone. With our affordable implant system that we use, not only do you get the fixture or the root form that screws into the bone, but you also get the abutment or the peg that the crown cements on to for free.

So we don’t have to charge an extra $700 for that. And then the crown that would go on top of that is just the price of the normal crown. Again, you’ll find with other oral surgery groups or other people that do implants, not only do they up-charge the dental implant but they also charge you $700 for the abutment and then they also charge you an extra $500 on top of their crown fee. So an affordable implant is about $1,900, which is about the same as a root canal apposed in a crown. So if you can afford regular dental treatment, you can afford an implant, affordable implants.

Female: Somebody from Allentown wrote in and she said that her neighbor got something called a “snap in denture”. She wanted to know what they were and can you explain — do you do that?

Dr. Weston: Well, sure. Snap in denture basically is a series of implants that are placed in the jawbone that has a little ball joint. I can actually show you here on this display. There’s a little ball joint that sticks out of the gums and then on the inside of the denture, it has a little O ring that fits right inside your existing denture or new denture that we can make for you. And the little O ring snaps over the top of these four implants on the bottom. These are done with local anesthetic, very simple, relatively pain-free procedure and you can actually get the benefits of this denture the same day of the surgery.

This would be called an implant retained denture and we do lots of these. If you consider the amount of biting force you lose by having a denture, you can gain up to 80% back with doing a snap-in type denture.
